The National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft of 2024 is very different from the previous year’s pick, which included a number of players who went on to play key roles for their new clubs.
The first round of the draft, which includes 30 selections, begins in New York on Wednesday, and the second round, which includes 30 picks, concludes on Thursday.
Victor Wembanyama, the first overall choice, led the way last season and was selected to the All-Defensive Team, an uncommon accomplishment for a rookie.
Wembanyama was voted Rookie of the Year and established himself as a potential NBA superstar thanks to his exploits with the San Antonio Spurs, which have solidified his place at the top.
But general managers searching for talent will have to search far and wide for significant players in the 2024 draft, which is regarded as one of the poorest in recent memory.
We highlight four bright prospects that should be on your radar on draft day.
Ulrich Chomche (Centre)
The 18-year-old Cameroonian who is the youngest player in the draft has the potential to create history by being the first NBA Academy Africa product to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft.
At the age of 13, Chomche traveled from his town in Bafang, western Cameroon, to attend the elite center in Saly, Senegal. However, he was only permitted to leave after he made a vow to his parents that he would depart if his academic performance declined.
Chomche was a latecomer to basketball, having just picked up the sport just prior to being scouted. Football is the most popular sport in Cameroon, although many players move to basketball in their teens when their height starts to work to their favor.
This was the case with 2023 NBA MVP and fellow Cameroonian Joel Embiid, who expressed his desire to have played professional football.
Standing at 6’10” (2.08 meters) tall, Chomche demonstrated his defensive prowess in the Basketball Africa League last season, averaging three blocks and one steal per game for the Rwandan team REG.
NBA scouts do not have as high of an opinion of Chomche as they do of Embiid, who was selected third back in 2014 and was predicted to be a superstar.
But another Cameroonian, Pascal Siakam, offers a fantastic model.
After spending some time in the G-League, the NBA’s development league where players may compete and polish their abilities to become NBA-ready, Siakam was selected by the Toronto Raptors with the 27th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
He won Finals MVP and guided his G-League squad to a championship. After that, Siakam earned a slot in the Raptors’ rotation and won the NBA championship and Most Improved Player award in 2019. The 30-year-old power forward has been a two-time All-Star and is an important member of the Indiana Pacers.
Chomche will probably start in the G-League to hone his talents as a second-round selection. But if he takes the same route as Siakam, it would be just as interesting to follow his career.
Zacharie Risacher (Forward)
Basketball runs in the family: Risacher’s father, Stephane, won an Olympic silver medal with France in 2000. Risacher is one of two Frenchmen rumored to be in the race for the first choice this year.
Despite being 19 years old, he made his EuroLeague basketball debut in 2021 at the age of 16 for the French team ASVEL.
Tony Parker, a former NBA point guard who won four championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs, serves as ASVEL president. The Texan team has established some enduring ties with France.
Wenbanyama became the first-ever Frenchman to be drafted number one last year when the Spurs selected him, and Risacher will be looking to do the same.
Before moving to JL Bourg, another French team, he was already regarded as a strong prospect going into this season. Scouts will be eager to see him continue where he has made significant progress with his shooting.
Risacher has the ability to develop into a player who can score from anywhere on the court and fit in well with an NBA offense without relying too heavily on the ball in his hands.
He excels as a peripheral defender as well. Though he stands 6’8″ (2.03 meters) tall, his lack of agility prevents him from being regarded as a tremendous finisher at the rim or a powerful rebounder just yet.
He is still young, though, so as his physical development progresses, his abilities could get better.
Nikola Topic (Guard)
Topic’s father, Milenko, finished second in the 1996 Olympics basketball competition when the United States defeated Yugoslavia. Topic is likewise the son of an Olympic silver medalist.
Upon reading his name, one may be reminded of another Serbian, three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.
In their own nation, they have both played for the same squad, Mega, which is well-known for producing NBA prospects.
But Topic’s style is entirely distinct from Jokic’s. The 18-year-old guard, who has scored a lot for Crvena Zvezda this season, is already a skilled passer and a dangerous finisher at the rim.
At the age of sixteen, Topic became one of the youngest players to ever compete in the EuroLeague.
In actuality, when he made his Real Madrid debut in the same tournament, he was just 5 days younger than Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic. Having played for the Dallas Mavericks in this season’s Finals, Doncic has established himself as one of the NBA’s top players.
Similar to Doncic when he first joined the NBA, there are some doubts over Topic’s defensive prowess.
His European accomplishments have been nothing near as impressive as the Mavs forward’s, who was selected third overall in the 2018 draft.
In addition, Topic injured his knee in January and made it worse in April, so some NBA clubs would be hesitant to choose him first overall.
Alexandre Sarr (Centre)
Another Frenchman, Sarr, is a strong candidate to be selected first in this selection.
His brother Olivier currently plays in the NBA for the Oklahoma City Thunder, while his father Massar was a professional player in Senegal.
Even at the age of 19, he already has a stellar basketball resume. At the age of sixteen, he joined the US Overtime Elite League (OTE) after playing for Real Madrid’s junior club.
The OTE was established to provide young athletes with a professional playing environment and skill development in order to better prepare them for the NBA. It was attended by Ausar and Amen Thompson, who were both selected in the top five in the 2023 draft.
Sarr signed with the Perth Wildcats of Australia last year after leaving OTE. He was a good, impact player who came off the bench for a squad that finished second in the regular season.
Despite playing only 17 minutes a game on average, the center was able to rack up 1.5 blocks.
He is a very strong defender. At 6’11” (2.10 meters), he can block shots with his stature and use his athleticism to get ahead of defenders who are smaller.
At the NBA level, defense versatility is a critical talent that should draw in club management.
